World Cities Day
The United Nations focuses on global urbanization on October 31st, World Cities Day, when the UN focuses on global urbanization. The United Nations addresses the challenges urbanization faces as well as promoting urbanization. Cities work on sustainable urbanization.
Urbanization refers to the increasing number of people who live in urban areas. This trend is a relatively recent development. The overwhelming majority of the world's population lived in rural areas at one time. Over 90% of the world's population lived in rural areas in 1800.. Many wealthy countries began to see a change during the 19th century. More and more people were moving to urban areas as a result of rising urban areas.
This pattern was especially true in the United States. By the year 2000, 80% of the population lived in urban areas. Cities account for half of the world's population on a global basis. The following are some of the world's most populated cities:: : Some of the world's most populated cities include::
- Tokyo – 37 million
- Delhi – 28 million
- Mexico City – 21 million residents – 21 million. 21 million
- Cairo – 20 million
New York City has 8.6 million residents, making it the country's most populated city. By 2050, the number of people living in cities is expected to double. India, China, Nigeria, Indonesia, Indonesia, and the United States are among the countries that will contribute the most to urbanization by 2050, including India, China, Nigeria, Nigeria, Indonesia, and the United States.
Multiple challenges arise as a result of rapid urbanization. They include congested traffic, environmental pollution, elevated crime rates, and reduced amounts of natural resources. Those living in cities often face sustainability issues, as well. These include a lack of affordable housing, decent jobs, essential services, food safety, and education.
For these reasons, the UN acknowledges the importance of achieving sustainability. These goals require improved planning for infrastructure, using technology, and improving social growth. However, urbanization isn't all bad.. For example, urban areas are often more inclusive, experience greater equality, and have access to new opportunities.
