A look back

Civic pride has existed for a long time. In fact, people from around the world have always participated in ways to make their communities better. The war of 1812, for Americans, was a pivotal moment in how our nation would unite as one and move away from the identification of single states or territories.

During the war of 1812, people were identifying with the colony they lived in. For example, Marylanders were Marylanders, while Virginians were Virginians.. If you were fighting for the British or fighting for the Americans, the divide between people who all lived in the United States began to arise among people who were either fighting for the British or fighting for the Americans. In addition, the American flag's design during this period became a popular symbol unifying all people in the country.
