On November 11th, Veterans Day in the United States Armed Forces honors military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. On November 11th, the country celebrated Veterans Day for the first time. However, beginning in 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act mandated that the federal holiday be rescheduled. Congress scheduled the observance of the fourth Monday of October for the fourth Monday of October. Congress returned it to its original date on November 11th in 1978. While the legal holiday remains on November 11th, if that date occurs on a Saturday or Sunday, businesses that officially observe the holiday will generally be closed on the following Friday or Monday, respectively.
