On January 16th annually honors a delectable pastry enjoyed around the country. National Fig Newton Day is celebrated on January 16th.
Newtons, A Nabisco's trademarked version of the fig roll, are a pastry filled with fig paste. Fig Newtons have an unusual and characteristic shape that has been adopted by many competitors, including generic fig bars.
Most illnesses were related to digestive disorders, according to many physicians up until the 19th century. They suggested a daily intake of biscuits and fruit as a cure. Fig rolls were an excellent alternative to their advice, since they were made locally. Fig rolls were a locally made handmade product.
In 1891, Philadelphia baker and fig-lover Charles Roser invented and patented the machine, which converted fig paste into a thick pastry dough. The Cambridgeport, MA-based Kennedy Biscuit Company later purchased Roser's recipe. After purchasing the recipe, they began mass production.. They first baked the first Fig Newtons baked at the F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery in 1891. After the town of Newton, Massachusetts, the company named the pastries.
Nabisco was formed by the Kennedy Biscuit Company and the New York Biscuit company after becoming closely affiliated, and the Kennedy Biscuit Company and the New York Biscuit company merged to form Nabisco. Fig Newtons were the fig rolls' trademarked by the new company.
