The screen at this first drive-in theater was 40 feet by 50 feet, and there were 400 car slots. "The whole family is welcome, regardless of how tumultuous the children are," the advertisement slogan was used. Wife Beware, An Adolphe Meniou film, was the first film to be seen. The concept grew quickly, and drive-ins sprung up in other places, as well. Around 4,000 drive-ins dot the United States by the late 1950s, and by the late 1950s, nearly 4,000 drive-ins had dotted the nation.

Copiague, Long Island, New York, once home to one of the country's biggest drive-in theaters. Over 29 acres and could park 2,500 vehicles were on the drive-in. In the case of bad weather, it also hosted a full-service restaurant with rooftop seating, a trolley system to take children and adults to the playground, and a large indoor theater in case of bad weather.
The introduction of color television, VCRs, and video rentals, along with the rise in land values and widespread use of daylight saving time, resulted in a dramatic decline in drive-in popularity.
