International Ataxia Awareness Day

Every year on September 25th, International Ataxia Awareness Day sheds light on this rare disease. The day also encourages Ataxia companies and individuals around the world to advocate for a cure.

Ataxia is defined as the loss of complete control of bodily movements.. Ataxia is a degenerative disease of the nervous system in the medical world.. Poor coordination, a tendency to stumble, difficulties with fine motor tasks, and language changes are all typical signs. The condition is caused by damage to the cerebellum.. The cerebellum, a fist-sized portion of the brain stem, controls muscle coordination.

The cerebellum is damaged by various conditions: Various conditions can cause damage to it.

  • Stroke
  • Tumor
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Brain degeneration
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Infections
  • Vitamin deficiencies

In some cases, overuse of alcohol or certain medications damages the cerebellum. Ataxia can be present in a variety of ways. Hereditary is one of several such disorders, called spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA). There is no known reason for ataxia for those with ataxia. It is called idiopathic ataxia when a doctor is unable to determine the cause of the illness.

In the United States, 150,000 people are affected by this rare disease. Ataxia affects 26 out of every 100,000 children worldwide, and there is no cure for ataxia.. However, signs can be controlled. Symptom management can often involve medications, physical therapy, and occupational therapy. Many who lose mobility as a result of ataxia may need a mobility device, such as a walker or wheelchair.

Patients of Ataxia have a shorter life expectantly. Many people who had ataxia as a child or young adult have ataxia. However, some people with ataxia have lived into their 60s and beyond.
