International Universal Health Coverage Day
Every year, December 12th marks International Universal Health Coverage Day as a way to encourage countries to move toward universal Health Coverage (UHC). (UHC) The day also aims to spread the word that access to affordable health care is a human right.
Universal health care is a program that provides quality medical services to all of its residents. Regardless of their ability to pay, the federal government provides health services to everyone. Only the United States has universal health care out of 33 developed countries. The Affordable Care Act was passed by President Obama in 2010 (ACA). This, however, is not considered universal health care.
Americans are the most familiar with Canada's universal health care system out of all developed countries.. No matter who pays, Canada has a single-payer system in which free health is available to all, regardless of who is able to pay. History has documented the first international universal health coverage day
The UN General Assembly made it a priority to accelerate the transition toward Universal Health Coverage on December 12th, 2012. In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly set a target of universal health coverage by 2030. This included access to high-quality health care services as well as safe and inexpensive essential medications and vaccines for all. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on global health and foreign policy on December 12th, 2017 that focused on the wellbeing of the world's most endangered populations.
