National Cartoonists Day

National Cartoonists Day, May 5th each year, honors all those talented ink-stained artists, both past and present, as well as the beautiful works they have created. Our talents have brought humor, entertainment, and our lives for the years, while still sparking discussion and debate, as well.

Richard Outcault (January 14, 1863 – September 25, 1928) is the creator of the modern comic strip. He was born in the United States. He studied for three years at the McMicken University's School of Design in Cincinnati, aged 15 years old. The Yellow Kid and Buster Brown comic strips were created by Outcault.

The readers of the New York World discovered an exciting new feature in their morning newspaper on Sunday, May 5, 1895. They discovered Outcault's full-color drawings featuring a large-eared, barefoot little boy with a mischievous grin on the pages.. The first commercially successful cartoon figure was the first commercially successful cartoon character. Hogan's Alley's first color version of the cartoon called Hogan's Alley would later be known as The Yellow Kid.
