National Cheddar Day

National Cheddar Day has some cheesy goodness on February 13th!

Without melt-able slices piled high, buttered bread would be buttered bread; burgers would be lacking without a zingling ooze; mac & cheese would be...mac, to be honest. So many of our popular American dishes simply wouldn't be the same without a slice of cheddar's delectableness.

Cheddar history

This love of cheddar has a long history. How did cheddar become a staple in so many of our favorite dishes? Let us tell you! Let us tell you!

In the 12th century, Cheddar, a village in Somerset, England, first appeared in the village of Cheddar. Although cheddar accounts for more than half of all cheese sold in the United States, it is a royal hit in the United Kingdom, where it was made. More than half of the cheese sales in the United Kingdom go to cheddar, in fact.

Peter McIntosh, the renowned cheesemaker, brought his cheese-making skills to Tillamook County, Oregon, where it rains a lot and the grass was always green. He taught the locals all he knew, and earned himself the name "Cheese King of the Coast" in due time. In Tillamook, there are more cows than people, and those local farmers have since formed the Tillamook County Creamery Association, the farmer-owned cooperative we now know today.

No wonder cheddar finds its way into so many recipes or a simple snack. No wonder cheddar is a favorite. The rich, creamy, and occasionally crumbly flavor is what keeps us coming back for more, bite after delectable bite.
