Amelia Simmons wrote in American Cookery in 1796, tracing back to 1796 when a note of "a cake to be baked in small cups" was published. In Eliza Leslie's Receipts cookbook, the first recorded evidence of the cupcake was in 1828 in Seventy-five Receipts for Pastry, Cakes, and Sweetmeats..

Bakers first baked their cupcakes in heavy pottery cups. Nevertheless, bakers today use a slew of devices at their disposal. Individual ramekins, small coffee mugs, large teacups, or other small ovenproof pottery-type dishes are still used for baking their cupcakes. Of course, the most popular cupcake tool is the muffin or cupcake pan. Multiple cups are mixed in a single container in this handy tool.

Chocolate cupcakes are available in a variety of flavors, as well. Of course, there's always the traditional chocolate cupcake. But why is there on a holiday?
