You may be grateful for Chester Greenwood's invention if you live in a cold climate like Chester Greenwood did and had large, protruding ears, as Chester Greenwood did. National Earmuff Day honors the man who discovered a better way to keep our ears warm all winter long.

Chester, 15, came up with a plan to keep his big ears warm after a day of ice skating in the freezing cold. Chester soon had a working model after assisting his grandmother, who stitched tufts of fur among wire loops of wire.

He was granted a patent for his latest invention on March 13, 1877. It was one of many that would be paid. Greenwood was a prolific entrepreneur, but the earmuff is his most popular product.

Greenwood made these ear protectors for almost 60 years, providing jobs to the residents of the Farmington, Maine area for the people.
