HISTORY IS HISTORY DAY HISTORY IS THE DAY OF NATIONAL FREETHOUGHT THOUGHT DAY. Freethought Day has been promoted by several organisations since at least 1997. To name a few, organizations such as the Freethought Society, American Humanist Association, and Secular Coalition For America are only a few.
The organizers selected October 12th in honor of a string of events dating back to the Salem Witch Trials in 1692. The Salem Witch Trials occurred in 1692. The trial was suspended due to disputed evidence and devils' claims by devils and specters. During the trials, devils and specters' allegations were present. In court, the hysteria surrounding the case and a letter sent by Massachusetts Governor William Phips on October 12th declared "spectral evidence" inadmissible. At least 20 people had already been executed as a result of the trial, up to that point. Hundreds of lives were saved by the governor's letter.
At some point, the trials did resume and "spectral evidence" was allowed, but the majority of the charges were quickly dismissed and those who were not guilty were quickly pardoned by Phips.
