National Maritime Day
Each year on May 22nd, National Maritime Day in the United States commemorates the establishment of the maritime industry in the United States. The Merchant Marines of the United States are also praised for their service and sacrifice for our country. Special recognition is given to ships and seafarers who have occupied a prominent position in our nation's history.

The people our maritime nation is dependent on are recognized by celebrations and ceremonies around the world. Each year the Department of Transportation holds a national celebration in Washington, D.C. at the Department of Transportation headquarters.
Although the holiday honors a transatlantic event, the maritime industry in the United States encompasses nearly every state in the country, with vessels transporting ships on lakes, rivers, and oceans. Shipyards aren't the only shipyards that are not restricted to shipyards. The national maritime day is the centennial maritime day's history
On May 20, 1933, Congress approved Public Resolution No. 7 designating May 22, 1933, as National Maritime Day in honor of the first successful transoceanic voyage from the United States.
