Iconic legacy
Edward Dee (1924-2019) and his family came from England in 1949 to the United States from England (1924-2019). Dee, a third-generation candy manufacturer, came up with a candy design that would help him establish his legacy. Dee started Ce De Candy Inc. in a rented property with two machines: a wrapping machine and a candy pellet-making unit, beginning in a factory in Bloomfield, N.J. In 1959, Dee's company moved to Elizabeth, N.J., and later to Union, N.J., where the company still exists today.
The company decided to rename Ce De Candy Inc. to Smarties Candy Company in 2011. The Dee family has always been sole owners of the company, keeping their family history alive. Jonathan and Michael, Dee's sons, joined the company in the 1970s.. For the first time in history, the company is now led by the founders' granddaughters, Co-Presidents Sarah Dee, Jessica Dee Sawyer, and Liz Dee, making it a woman-owned business.
Over the years, manufacturing improvements have included: expanding manufacturing facilities, adding solar power to their NJ candy factory, which offsets half of their energy use, and introducing new Smarties, including Mega Smarties – the largest Smarties roll available.
A sweet future
Education was a vital part of Dee's life long before he'd immigrate to the United States, and he knew the value of education. He decided to name his candy Smarties to encourage others to never stop learning because of this.. To maintain his vision, the company launched the "Smarter Think" campaign in 2013. Smarties has donated more than $250,000 to classrooms in need since then.
Edward Dee's early days were going door to make candy sales go straight paid off. Smarties brand continues to be a leader in the candy industry, with billions of Smarties rolls per year produced. The Dee family has continued to produce an iconic candy for smarty pants people around New Jersey and Ontario, with factories in New Jersey and Ontario.
