National Smoothie Day
Capitalizing on the bountiful fruits and vegetables available this time of year, National Smoothie Day on June 21st celebrates the refreshing beverage brought to you by the blender.
Smoothies turn our fruits and vegetables into a delectable refreshing drink by using fresh ingredients, whole grains, and punches of flavor. Some smoothies use herbs and spices, raising the flavor level. In a variety of combinations, the base ingredients include milk, yogurt, juice, and a blend of fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables.
You may be a little green when you add vegetables to your smoothie, but don't believe it until you've tried it. Both fruit and vegetable smoothies will pack in the vitamins, but be aware that the calories will also rise. Making smart choices will help keep your smoothies on the healthier side.
- Limit your boosters – Increase the fat and calories in your diet by using nut butters, seeds, grains, and protein powders. Although these ingredients add flavor and even nutrients, they can be used in small amounts.. You can also limit them to 1-2 per smoothie. Those are also limited to 1-2 per smoothie
- Smoothie portion size – smoothies can become oversized, just like our regular meals. Make sure you're using the right portion for your main ingredients so that when your smoothie is complete, the calories and fat add up to a balanced serving. For example, a cup of berries, half a cup of yogurt, and a teaspoon of a nut butter should not bring you over
- Prepared juices are best – avoid juices – prepared juices are calories-rich. Consider adding a calorie-free sweetener or restricting the juice to just a splash if you need a little more sweetness
- Add vegetables – Spinach, beets, kale, and zucchini are only a few of the vegetables that add vitamins and fiber without adding a lot of calories. These veggies don't have any offputting flavors, and they don't have any offputting flavors
- Add a little spice – Cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and turmeric all add flavor without adding calories. They also provide us with other health benefits as well.. Cinnamon, for example, may help lower blood sugar and blood pressure
Smoothies make a great meal substitute, as well. A smoothie can be the answer whether you're craving something sweet or need an energy boost.
