National Winnie The Pooh Day

Author A.

Milne's lovable Pooh Bear, as he was affectionally referred to, is a fictional bear based on a black bear named Winnie. During World War II, Winnie and a swan named Pooh would visit the London Zoo often and named his own teddy bear after her and a swan named Pooh.

This family's friendship inspired a series of books beginning with When We Were Young in 1924. The books were beautifully illustrated by E.H. Shepard.

Thousands of children and millions of others were taken through the Hundred Acre Woods by their families and millions of others. Each individual was given a unique role in the books. If the wisdom of Owl or Rabbit led the group awry or a celebration, the story's characters became popular around the world.

Disney bought the rights to the Winnie-the-Pooh characters in the 1960s, removing the hyphen from Pooh's name. The illustrations were a bit different, too.

Milne's stories have been translated into over 50 languages and are now considered classic children's tales today..
