Comic books are also known as comic magazines, first widely distributed in the United States. Generally, comic books are published in sequential and opposing panels depicting individual scenes. Each scene often includes descriptive prose and written narratives. The panels are assembled as a complete story or a portion of a serial when assembled together.

Characters' heads were shown in bubbles or balloons above their heads in the early comic strips (which later gave rise to comic books). The designs can be quite intricate as an art form. For example, text, dialogue, personalities, color, and imagery all enhance part of a storyline. These storylines have also distinguished eras, artists, genres, and themes over time.

The term "comic book" appears in the first book published as a book reprinted of comedic comic strips. Despite their name, comic books are not all humorous in tone and feature stories in all genres.
