Several people have disputed the dish's origins. Mr. Robert McCay Green of One such allegation was made by a Mr. Robert McCay Green. Customers in an 1862 Newport Daily News for Sheld's commemorating Ice Cream Soda are encouraged to "try It, Try It, It," advertises the product. It was something new at the time, by the looks of it.
