The Rocky Mountains range dominates the state. The Snake River winds its way through the state's rugged western border, which has the country's deepest river gorge, the deepest river gorge in North America. The spectacular landscapes along the Snake River took thousands of years to sculpt, as shown by Hells Canyon National Recreation Area. The Snake River's rugged landscapes were difficult to sculpt.
