Punch made its first appearance in the early 17th century.. The drink is believed to have been created by sailors en route to England via India. Punch quickly gained a following and soon expanded to other countries.
Punch is a loan word from Hindi panch (meaning five). Originally, punch was made with five ingredients: alcohol, sugar, lemon, water, and tea or spices. It was called paantsch.
Many varieties of "fruit punch" beverages are now available in soft drink shops. Most punch mixes are red in color. Despite the name, they do contain only a small amount of fruit juice. The key ingredients are sugar, corn syrup, citric acid, and artificial flavors.
