What is National Strawberry Day?
On February 27th, we continue with February's heart-shaped and red theme by hosting National Strawberry Day. These ripe, sweet berries will brighten up any dish and are delectable on their own.
The name's origins are a few different tales. The berries will fall off the leaves and become "strewn" about the plant, according to the more widely accepted version. "strewn-berries" became "strawberries" over time. strawberry beds were mulched with straw, insulating the plants over the winter, keeping weeds at bay during the growing season, and making them easier to harvest. English children stringing the berries on grass straws and selling the "straw berries" in their communities, according to another sweet tale.
Berry picking tips:
- Pick fully ripe berries. Strawberries will not ripen if picked too early, like bananas or pears, so they won't continue to ripen
