Lead or charcoal marks were erased from paper before rubber erasers were used to erase lead or charcoal marks from paper. Crustless bread was another alternative for the eraser.. "Bread erasers were used in place of rubber erasers in lieu of rubber erasers," a Tokyo student explained, "and so they would offer them to us with no limit on the number." We thought nothing of taking these and eating a solid part of a solid meal would at least partially satisfy our hunger."
