World Rhino Day
World Rhino Day, September 22nd, honors five species of rhinos around the world.. The day raises concerns of the plight of these magnificent creatures from a conservation viewpoint.
The five rhino species include Black, White, Greater One-horned, Sumatran, and Javan. rhinos were discovered throughout Eurasia and Africa at one time. Around 500,000 rhinos roamed the earth in the early 20th century. Rhino rhinos have a difficult time surviving outside of national parks and reserves today. In 2011, a Javan rhino subspecies was declared extinct. Only 80 Sumatran rhinos survive today, and only 80 rhinos remain.
Thanks to conservation efforts, the greater one-horned rhino (also known as the Indian rhino) in India is on the rise in number thanks to conservation efforts. Today, there are more than 3,500 of these rhinos in existence. However, they are also considered vulnerable. They are still vulnerable. The Black rhino is also critically endangered.
